The Ring Binder

the classic, the traitor

Ring binders are the most common product on the market for binding loose-leaf pages. At school or in the office, they make binding three-hole-punched pages a snap.

Many collectors trust them to safely store their trading cards in loose-leaf pocket pages, but one wrong page turn or careless flip can cause permanent damage. Even if you are careful with the pages yourself, all bets are off once you hand your binder over to share your collection with someone else.

I tried my best to be careful and protect my cards, but I still ended up with this dent.


The Permanent-Page Portfolio

The ring dent problem eventually gave rise to the trading card “portfolio”, a book with permanently-attached card pocket pages. The sewn or welded pages are directly connected to the book spine, removing the risk of mechanical damage from the binding.

Annoyingly, this completely sacrifices the freedom to add, remove, or recombine pages. Once the portfolio fills up, the only way to add a card is to move everything to a bigger binder or move a portion of the cards to a different binder. Either way, each card you relocate will need to be removed from the first binder one at a time.

Produce physical prototype using 3D printing. This will validate that the device works as intended in its current geometry. Also allows for discovering defects and possible problems to fix in future models.

Optimize model for manufacturing (DFM)

After deciding on materials to use, follow Design For Manufacturing (DFM) principles to update the geometry of each part to make sure that it can be reasonably manufactured using conventional manufacturing methods.
